Goals for newer players
These are my goals (which have helped been set by higher players). Who knows you may want to follow them.
-Get at least a colony on each luxury good
-Have a decent standing army
-Hideouts at high levels with maximum spies
-Getting an active list of friends
-Researching and getting academy to a higher level
-Upgrading Tavern/Museum
-Upgrading town hall to the point where you can steadily support it with wine.

I manged everything except the spies. It's difficult trying to upgrade them when there are so many things to upgrade.

Upgrade the warehouses and try and keep resources within the "safe" level until you want to use them to build. Try and time it so that you know when your ships will land with excess resources for an upgrade. Log on whenever you can to check and upgrade when you know the resources are going to be there.

I agree with most except for the hideout. If you are not an aggressive player and you make sure that attacks on your colonies do not pay (= high warehouse levels) you don't need hide outs.
Most of my colonies have 3 warehouses - one has 4. They average 20 to 27k safe resources each

Trust me hideouts are important, they can really pay off in times of war.

Hideouts are only important to players who have a need for spies that means that hideouts are not a necessity for players who:
This is because spies are good for two things:
Players with lots of warehouses/high safe limit have no need for defensive espionage and non aggressive players have no need for attack preparation espionage. If you're a player who satisfies one of these conditions, your need for a hideout is significantly less and if you satisfy both conditions, then a hideout is more or less a waste of space.

making sure others have a hard time spying on your town (defensive esp)
